Build a recurring-cost list
Include accommodation, utilities, food, local transport, phone or internet, insurance and required study materials. Ask what is included in a housing quote and how long the contract lasts. Use figures for your actual campus area rather than a country-wide average.
Account for the start of your stay
Allow for travel, application-related charges and any confirmed housing deposit or essential setup purchases. Record when each payment is due. A manageable annual total can still create difficulties if several payments fall in the same week.
Keep currencies and assumptions visible
Write each estimate in its original currency with its source and date. If you make a comparison in another currency, record the exchange rate and date separately and allow for transfer charges. The assessment does not convert currencies for you.
Review the plan with your funding source
Discuss who will pay, when money will be available and how unexpected expenses would be managed. Avoid counting an unconfirmed scholarship or possible future earnings as guaranteed income. Update the plan when you receive official fees or housing terms.
Your checklist
- Separate annual, monthly and one-time costs.
- Confirm what accommodation quotes include.
- Mark payment dates and currencies.
- Identify a buffer for unexpected expenses.
