Useful guides

How to build a university shortlist.

A useful shortlist is small enough to research properly and broad enough to give you meaningful choices. Build it around evidence, not a familiar name alone.

Define your non-negotiables

Choose your intended level, subject area, preferred teaching language and workable tuition budget. Keep a separate list of preferences such as city size, campus setting and module options. This helps you distinguish an essential requirement from a nice-to-have.

Create one comparison record per programme

Record the institution, exact course title, campus, duration, intake, entry requirements and official URL. Note when you checked each item. Check the recognition information relevant to the qualification and your future plans through the appropriate official authority.

Keep uncertainty visible

Mark requirements you have not confirmed as questions rather than assumptions. If your qualification or result format is not mentioned, ask the admissions office how it is assessed. Do not translate a grade into another scale yourself.

Narrow the list with reasons

Compare the actual curriculum and full costs. Keep the options that meet your essential needs, and write one reason for including each. Discuss the unresolved questions with a counsellor before spending time or money on applications.

Your checklist

  • Use exact programme names and campuses.
  • Keep a dated official source for each requirement.
  • Separate essential needs from preferences.
  • Review the shortlist when your results or budget change.

Check official information

Official starting points: Education Malaysia Global Services · Campus China. Check the institution or awarding body’s current programme notice for exact requirements.
