Understanding scholarship coverage.

The word “scholarship” does not tell you how much of your study plan is funded. Read the award terms line by line before including it in your budget.

Separate the different cost categories

Check whether the award covers tuition, accommodation, insurance, a living allowance or travel. An award described as a fee reduction may apply only to tuition. Record exclusions and expenses that you must pay yourself.

Check duration and renewal

Find out whether support applies for one period or the whole programme. Look for renewal conditions, academic requirements and circumstances that can end support. Ask how payments are made and whether you need to cover costs before funds arrive.

Understand the application route

Admission and scholarship applications may have different forms, deadlines and decision makers. For China, routes and teaching-language requirements vary by scheme. Use the specific awarding body’s current notice, not an old social-media post.

Prepare a plan without the award

Calculate the remaining cost for partial funding and consider what you would do if funding is not offered. Do not treat meeting the minimum eligibility conditions as an award confirmation. Wait for written terms from the awarding body.

Your checklist

  • List included and excluded costs.
  • Confirm duration, renewal and payment timing.
  • Verify the current official application route.
  • Keep a realistic alternative funding plan.
